A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of the body’s urinary system. It happens when germs get into the urine (wee) and travel into the urinary tract.
UTIs are very common, especially in babies and young children. 1 in 50 babies and young children will have had a UTI by the age of 2 years. By the time they are 16, 1 in 10 girls and 1 in 30 boys will have had a UTI.
UTIs are usually mild and cause no long-term damage. However in some cases they can be serious, especially in babies. Repeated UTIs can lead to long-term kidney damage. They can also be a symptom of other conditions that may need treating.
