Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) (also called vesicoureteric reflux) is a common condition, especially in babies and young children. It occurs in 1 in 3 children who have a urinary tract infection (UTI). When children with VUR go for a wee, some urine refluxes (goes back up the wrong way) towards one or both kidneys.
The name means:
- vesico – to do with the bladder
- ureteral (or ureteric) – to do with the ureter
- reflux – a backward flow

Children with VUR may be at greater risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in their bladder or kidneys and may need to take medicines to prevent or treat infection.
